Motorways like the M5 have long proven to be inherently safer,
more efficient and less polluting than other roads.
Motorways have higher speed limits, hard shoulders, fewer intersections, one way traffic flow and no pedestrians. Even so, following a few simple guidelines will make travelling on the M5 safer and smoother for you and your fellow motorists.
Be safe on the M5
Do not cross the unbroken white line separating lanes at the main toll plaza. Stay within one lane as you drive through the plaza.
Be ready to accommodate motorists changing lanes as they enter or exit the motorway. Don't tailgate.
When travelling in the electronic tag express lanes through the toll plaza, do not stop.
When entering from a ramp increase your speed so you can merge with motorway traffic, do not stop.
If you have a problem, pull off onto the left hard shoulder.
Emergency telephones are located at regular intervals along the M5 Motorway for your use.
If you need to stop on the road shoulder, take extreme care when entering and exiting your vehicle.
