20 Oct 2006 The M5 has announced changes designed to improve traffic flow, motorist and staff safety through the main toll plaza at Hammondville, particularly at peak times.
The changes are necessary to improve traffic flow beyond the toll plaza, ensuring that traffic moves as efficiently as possible.
The changes include:
* Reducing the number of complex post-plaza merges, through a combination of the closure of one cash lane in each direction and extending the lane delineation barriers between cash and electronic lanes a further 225 metres after the toll plaza.
* Constructing crash barriers around toll booths to enhance motorist and toll booth staff safety; and
* Installing approach awareness strips in the cash lanes prior to the toll booths also to improve motorist and staff safety.
General Manager of Interlink Roads Rex Wright said that the changes would allow a more constant flow through the toll gates by reducing the number of merges immediately after the plaza.
Mr Wright said the large number of complex merges immediately after the toll booths has been identified as a safety concern and a key source of increasing delays.
He said the M5 would monitor the effect of the changes over the coming months to ensure that the best outcome for motorists was achieved.
