M5 South-West safety

Free flowing, high tech

  • one way traffic flow with fewer merges
  • no pedestrians (remember - it's not safe to walk on a motorway!)
  • an intelligent system that alerts our team to any traffic issues
  • overhead signs that warn you about changed traffic conditions
  • a response team that works to clear traffic issues quickly
  • around the clock maintenance

In an emergency

It's hard to remember what to do!  Why not download this guide from the Centre for Road Safety and keep it in your glovebox.

  • Follow the instructions on the overhead signs or from the incident response crew.
  • If you break down, where possible pull off onto the left hard shoulder.
  • Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 131 700.
  • If you do need to get out of your vehicle don't cross the motorway and watch the traffic extremely carefully.
  • Emergency telephones are located at regular intervals along the M5 Motorway.
